Trying to keep up with News from peta2...

In the next 17 months, up to 400 of KFC's 5,500 restaurants in the United States are expected to be closed down—that would be a whopping 7.2% ...one KFC owner even admits that the stores are closing because they just ain't makin' money. (reminder to hold more KFC demos)...

Whole Foods founder (and longtime vegan) John Mackey recently announced that he has decided to cut his salary to $1 because he is more interested in making the world a better place than in making lots of money.

Apparently POM's Vice President and spokesperson, Fiona Posell, couldn't take the heat—this past Friday, the juice company posted a press release announcing that Fiona has resigned after several months of protests by animal rights activists. For those of you who don't know, POM funds painful experiments on animals in order to sell pomegranate juice. In one of POM's ridiculous experiments, pregnant mice were fed POM juice and their week-old babies were locked in a chamber with almost no oxygen for 45 minutes, causing severe brain damage; the babies were then killed so that experimenters could dissect their brains.

Why You can't trust dentists or doctors...

Diet Coke Plus would be fortified with vitamins and minerals, making it the first nutrient-enhanced carbonated soda offered by a major brand.

sweet now u can drink healhty soda! haha jk...

"Coca-Cola Company on June 15 withdrew its products from Belgian stores, and the French government banned the sale of some Coca-Cola drinks after scores of Belgian children fell ill after consuming the products.

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), the not-for-profit membership organization representing the specialty of pediatric dentistry, announced a collaborative research and education partnership with the Coca-Cola Foundation."

The partnership has been criticized by the U.S. non-profit group Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), which voiced concerns that Coca-Cola, whose products they say cause tooth decay, obesity and other health problems in children, will have a strong influence on the dental group.

Nonetheless, CSPI fears that, regardless of how the grant money is used, the partnership will make it unlikely for the AAPD to support ventures that go against Coca-Cola’s interests, such as removing soft-drink machines from schools.

Dr. Mercola's Comment

I just wonder how these guys can go to sleep at night. Even children realize that sugar is not good for their teeth.

Perhaps the mercury exposure and secondary severe neurological impairment from drilling amalgam fillings and sucking in mercury vapors all day long has finally got to these expert dentists.

Whatever their reasons, this alliance borders on the criminal. This is the equivalent of the American Lung Association being funded by Phillip Morris.

Unanswered questions on Oklahoma Bombing

This is how the government breaks the truth to us, those who they percieve as the 'sheeple'. They wait at least 10 years to admit that we have not been told the whole truth, and then on top of that bury the story in the back of the newspaper on fucking Christmas Day when no one will ever read it. Watch as any serious follow-up to this story will get dropped by the mainstream media just as quietly as this story snuck in.

1995 EXPLOSION
Okla. bombing probe flayed
Congressional report criticizes FBI on lingering questions

JOHN SOLOMON
Associated Press

WASHINGTON - The FBI failed to fully investigate information suggesting other suspects may have helped Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols with the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing, allowing questions to linger more than a decade after the deadly attack, a congressional inquiry concludes.

The House International Relations investigative subcommittee will release the findings of its two-year-review as early as Wednesday, declaring there is no conclusive evidence of a foreign connection to the attack but that far too many questions remain.

The subcommittee's report will conclude there is no doubt McVeigh and Nichols were the main perpetrators, and it discloses for the first time that Nichols confirmed to House investigators he participated in the robbery of an Arkansas gun dealer that provided the proceeds for the attack.

There have long been questions about that robbery because the FBI concluded McVeigh was in another state when it occurred.

The report also sharply criticizes the FBI for failing to be curious enough to pursue credible information that foreign or U.S. citizens may have had contact with Nichols or McVeigh and could have assisted their plot.

"We did our best with limited resources, and I think we moved the understanding of this issue forward a couple of notches even though important questions remain unanswered," Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, R-Calif., the subcommittee chairman, said in an interview with The Associated Press.

Rohrabacher's subcommittee saved its sharpest words for the Justice Department, saying officials there exhibited a mind-set of thwarting congressional oversight and did not assist the investigation fully.

The report rebukes the FBI for not fully pursuing leads suggesting other suspects may have provided support to McVeigh and Nichols before their truck bomb killed 168 people in the main federal building in Oklahoma City on April 19, 1995.

The report says the inadequacy of the bureau's work was exposed two years ago when some bombing evidence overlooked for 10 years was discovered in a home linked to Nichols that had been searched repeatedly by agents.

FBI spokesman Richard Kolko said Sunday, "Having not yet read the report, it would be inappropriate to comment on its contents."

Nonetheless, Kolko said: "The Oklahoma City bombing case was the largest case the FBI worked on before 9-11. Agents at virtually every office, domestically and overseas, covered thousands of leads. Every bit of information was investigated and reviewed. The FBI worked tirelessly to cover all of the leads and conducted a thorough and complete investigation."

The subcommittee concludes the Justice Department should not have rushed to execute McVeigh in 2001 after he dropped his court appeals, and that officials should have made more efforts to interview and question him about evidence suggesting he might have gotten help from other people who remain unpunished.

The former lead FBI agent in the case, Dan Defenbaugh, told AP a few years ago he was trying to get one last interview with McVeigh to go over unanswered questions in the case but could not get it arranged before McVeigh was executed.

Vegan Baking Staples...

You should be able to find the following items in any major supermarket. Of course if you go to a natural food store/health food store, it would be a guarantee, and if you went to the "natural food" section of a Super Stop N Shop it would be a lot easier to find...

for $3 you get the equivilant of 150 eggs; it has a shelf life of forever.
mine has lasted me 5 years and i'm still not done yet...
and i've enjoyed years of baking fine vegan pancakes, french toast, cookies, muffins, cakes, etc.

for vegan butter or margerine...

or

for chocolate chips, just look for "dark chocolate" and read the ingredients, many don't have any milk derivatives (whey, milk powder, etc).

that's really all you need to know. but if you really want to get into it, check out chooseveg.com (receipes section) or vegcooking.com, and for online vegan stores where you can buy lots of hard to find items, gourmet vegan chocolates, vegan jerky, vegan cheese-spreads, vegan body care/hygene items, etc etc (in case your dopy and can't find this stuff in the store by you, or don't have time to, or just like ordering stuff online...)...

The Troops...

ok people get really offended when i say "fuck the troops" in response to the torture, rape, and murder they either commit personally, or indirectly support by being in the military...

my question for you then is...

why have NOT ONE U.S. soldier in iraq done the noble thing and REFUSED TO SERVE. where are the mahatma gandhi's and martlin luther king jr's? you want respect and support for the u.s. populace who is against war - then you have to earn it.

In Israel, soldiers have refused to serve in israeli-occupied palestine, and have taken the jail sentences along with their refusal and disobedience being covered in media worldwide.

Image how easy it would be to stop U.S. involvement in unjust wars if only the troops who were morally opposed would stop fighting. It doesn't matter how many U.S. citizens we have in the streets (this has been proven!), but it matters if we have enough pawns on the battle-field. I feel that stopping the war will only come when the troops stand up and take whatever consequences come to them when they refuse to fight an unjust war (jail).

Of course, the military's plan to stop making them think for themselves is to poison them with flouride and other mind-controlling drugs, so even if I saw a troop refuse or raise questions about being flouridated I would "support" him.

To anyone in the military or with friends or family in the military, if you want me to support them than put your muscle where your mouth is. Stand up and make a difference. The power to stop this war and the U.S. empire of conquest lies with YOU; the pawns. No pawns = no wars.

Nike+ IPod = Surveillance

By Annalee Newitz
02:00 AM Nov, 30, 2006

If you enhance your workout with the new Nike+ iPod Sport Kit, you may be making yourself a surveillance target.

A report from four University of Washington researchers to be released Thursday reveals that security flaws in the new RFID-powered device from Nike and Apple make it easy for tech-savvy stalkers, thieves and corporations to track your movements. With just a few hundred dollars and a little know-how, someone could even plot your running routes on a Google map without your knowledge.

The Nike+ iPod gives runners real-time updates about the speed and length of their workouts via a small RFID device that fits into the soles of Nike shoes, and broadcasts workout data to a small receiver plugged into an iPod Nano.

While this setup sounds convenient and cool, it didn't sit well with Scott Saponas, a computer science graduate student at the University of Washington in Seattle. After enjoying his Nike+ iPod for a few months, Saponas began to suspect there might be other, more nefarious uses for the gear.

He brought his concerns to University of Washington computer science professor Yoshi Kohno and fellow graduate students Carl Hartung and Jonathan Lester. After just a few weeks of tinkering, the four researchers discovered that the Nike+ iPod is, as Kohno put it, "an easy surveillance device."

The first problem is that the RFID in the shoe sensor contains its own on-board power source, essentially turning your running shoe into a small radio station capable of being received from up to 60 feet away, with a signal powerful enough to be picked up from a passing car.

Compare this with the roughly 3-centimeter to 10-inch read range of a typical consumer-grade RFID, such as the kind you find in smart tags in Gap clothing or in credit cards, which is passively powered by the reader.

Additionally, the sensor will reveal its unique ID to any Nike+ iPod receiver. With a quick hardware hack that Kohno said "any high school student could do in the garage," the researchers hooked a Nike+ iPod receiver up to a Linux-based "gumstix" -- a tiny, $79 computer that could easily be hidden in door frames, in trees next to jogging trails or in a pocket.

In their report, the researchers detail a scenario in which a stalker who wants to know when his ex-girlfriend is at home taps into her Nike+ iPod system. He simply hides the gumstix device next to her door, and it registers her presence as she passes by in her Nike shoes. If he adds a small "wifistix" antenna to the device, it can transmit this information to any nearby Wi-Fi access point and alert him to her presence via SMS or by plotting her location on Google Maps.

A thief could use a similar set-up to case several houses at once, figuring out when Nike-wearing owners are at home and when they aren't.

Neither Apple nor Nike had comments at press time.

Electronic Frontier Foundation staff attorney Lee Tien says the Nike+ iPod is a harbinger of things to come. "We're going to see more devices like this in the next few years," he said. "This isn't just a problem with the Nike+ iPod per se -- it's a cautionary tale about what happens when companies unwittingly build a surveillance capacity into their products."

UC Berkeley RFID researcher David Molnar agreed with Tien, adding, "This shows a need for independent oversight and investigation of these technologies before they go to market. These things happen because the people building devices don't think about privacy implications."

Molnar also speculated about how easy it would be for a company to build their own tiny readers and deploy them in a large environment, selling the data stream to those who would track spouses or teens, or collect information about how many people wearing Nikes visit malls or movie theaters. "Given that there are no laws about skimming data in California right now, it would be perfectly legal to do it there," he said.

The researchers, for their part, just want to see Apple, Nike and other manufacturers fix the problem. They offer a simple solution in their report, which is to build the sensors to speak to only one reader.

"Using relatively standard cryptographic techniques, you could make it very difficult to listen to broadcasts from somebody else's sensor," said Kohno. He hastened to add that he doesn't believe Apple and Nike purposefully designed the sensors to be surveillance-friendly. "I just think companies should be as aware of privacy issues as they are of safety issues," he said. "Too often, they aren't."

America: Freedom to Fascism

First it's National ID cards, RFID technology, and checkpoints in the name of "terrorism" that the government actually carried out anyway...

Next it will be forceable microchipping of the entire population to track their every move and sending impulses into their bodies to change their emotions (make them patriotic and loyal, control their sex drive, depression/happiness, etc).

If we don't act now, we will all be mind-controlled slaves for the rest of the 21st century.

If we can't see it, does it exist?

The Difficulty and Importance of Vegetarian Advocacy
If we can't see it, does it exist?

Years ago, Paul McCartney pointed out that, "if slaughterhouses had glass walls, we'd all be vegetarians." This concisely captures the main difficulty of vegetarian advocacy -- that people don't have to see the animals they eat being imprisoned in factory farms and butchered in industrial slaughterhouses. One can order a chicken sandwich, and that is all that is involved -- just a sandwich. Even after reading detailed, illustrated information about factory farms, the cruelties of meat don't stick with every individual, especially when the rest of society conceals the realities behind meat.

Similarly, if factory farms and slaughterhouses were as visible as the meat they produce, all thoughtful, compassionate individuals would be vegetarian advocates. Without the elaborate concealment, it would be clear that the vast majority of animals exploited in this country suffer and die to be eaten.

Human nature leads us to focus on the familiar and immediate, such as the campaigns to help dogs and cats displaced by Katrina. In fact, people concerned with animals have spent hundreds of millions of dollars on high-profile cases, while focusing much less money on the roughly 99% of domesticated animals who are slaughtered to be eaten.

We each want to feel we have accomplished something tangible, that we have achieved a quantifiable victory. Promoting vegetarianism doesn't always provide this kind of reward. You meet few of the people you have influenced to stop eating animals, and you can't see the animals who, in the alternative universe where you hadn't pursued veg outreach, would have suffered horribly in factory farms.

Yet, the number of animals helped by exposing factory farms and promoting vegetarianism are impressive. For example, over 650,000 students have been handed Vegan Outreach booklets through our Adopt a College program. We calculate that this has prevented the suffering of more than 28.5 million birds and mammals. And this counts only our college outreach program -- it doesn't include all the animals spared by the other 3.8 million booklets distributed!

Of course, we could also list some of the signs that we -- a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens -- are, indeed, changing the world: e.g., the 2005 ARAMARK poll that showed that 24% of surveyed college students consider having vegan options important; the ever-increasing availability of vegetarian and vegan options; the stories reported every day by Vegan Outreach leafleters. However, these are mostly indirect indications of success; for many people, these aren't enough to support person-to-person outreach.

In short, we know how terribly animals are suffering today, and the animals saved by vegetarian outreach are so abstract as not to exist, let alone to feel like a "victory." Because there are so few of us who look beyond the familiar and immediate, recognize the magnitude of the suffering caused by eating meat, and understand the opportunity veg outreach presents, we have a special obligation to do the hard, intangible, and often unrewarding work of tearing down the walls that hide the atrocities of factory farms and industrial slaughterhouses. We need to work, every day, to abolish, totally and forever, the horrors of modern animal agriculture.

In the end, we must remember that throughout history, there has always been a "right" and a "wrong" side to ethical issues -- a right side to slavery, women's suffrage, civil rights. And there have always been "reasonable" people, advising caution and realism: "You can't really expect to end slavery/get women the vote/pass a civil rights law. Let's be realistic in what we seek."
With hindsight, though, we don't respect those who simply accepted the seeming limitations of the status quo. Rather, we admire those who stood up for what is right and, in so doing, changed history.

We can be those people. If not us, who? If not now, when?

10 Steps to Being Happier and Healthier

Researchers at the National Institute on Aging have determined that well-being is strongly influenced by individual characteristics. Their 10-year study showed people with a happy disposition in 1973 were still happy in 1983, even if their job, location, or marital status had changed.

If you want to create positive emotions, but don't know where to begin, the links below will bring happiness into your life. Here's a sampling:

* Be grateful to the people around you.
* Cut out perfectionism, as no one in this wonderful world of ours is perfect.
* Take time to help others who need it.
* Forget regrets, stay in the present and constantly reassess your priorities.
* Schedule some daily down time to relax, work on a hobby or meditate.

The Optimist Creed

PROMISE YOURSELF...

To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind.
To talk health, happiness and prosperity to every person you meet.
To make all your friends feel that there is something in them.
To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true. To think only of the best, to work only for the best, and to expect only the best.
To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own.
To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future.
To wear a cheerful countenance at all timed and give every living creature you meet a smile.
To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticise others.
To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear; and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.
To think well of yourself and to proclaim this fact to the world, not in loud words but in great deeds.
To live in the faith that the whole world is on your side so long as you are true to the best that is in you.

Many have found inspiration in The Optimist Creed. In hospitals, the creed has been used to help patients recover from illness. In locker rooms, coaches have used it to motivate their players.

Putin's 'rape joke' shows our leaders true selves?

Russia's President Vladimir Putin has been overheard joking about the virility of his Israeli counterpart, who is accused of multiple rape.

A Russian journalist said Mr Putin joked that President Moshe Katsav was a "mighty man", adding "we all envy him".

Mr Katsav is facing allegations that he raped members of his staff. He strongly denies the claims.

Mr Putin's spokesman said the joke was not meant to be overheard

A Kremlin spokesman admitted Mr Putin made a joke, but said it was not meant to be overheard.

Mr Putin's comment was made at the end of a press conference held by Mr Putin and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert in Moscow, which focused mainly on the Iran crisis.

I don't think that the proper translation is able to reflect the meaning of the joke
Dmitri Peskov
Kremlin spokesman

As the leaders prepared to leave, the microphone caught Mr Putin saying "greetings to your president".

Mr Putin's spokesman said the joke was not meant to be overheard

The microphone then went dead, but journalist Andrei Kolesnikov told the BBC he heard the rest of the comment.

He said the president continued: "What a mighty man he turns out to be! He raped 10 women - I would never have expected this from him. He surprised us all - we all envy him!"

There reportedly followed loud laughter among the official delegations.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov admitted: "Yes really, these words were pronounced."

But he said it "in no way means that President Putin welcomes rape".

"The president was joking," he told the BBC's World Today radio programme.

"Russian is a very complicated language, sometimes it is very sensitive from the point of view of phrasing.

"I don't think that the proper translation is able to reflect the meaning of the joke."

Israeli police have said there is enough evidence to charge Mr Katsav, 60, over allegations of "rape, forced sexual acts, sexual acts without consent and sexual harassment".

He may also be charged with wire-tapping.

Starbucks (slowly) Moving Toward rBGH (rBST)-free?

Starbucks Moving Toward rBGH (rBST)-free?

A memo being e-mailed to people who have called Starbucks asking them to go rBGH-free said "We are actively engaged with all of our dairy suppliers to explore a conversion of all core dairy products - fluid milk, half and half, whipping cream and eggnog - to rBST-free in our U.S. company-operated locations."

This is fantastic news and we're obviously delighted that Starbucks is moving in this direction. There are a few qualifications, however. First, there is no deadline at this point for Starbucks' dairy suppliers to go rBGH-free. We're hoping this will be months, not years. Also, this is for company-operated stores only and doesn't apply to its licensed operations in such locations as supermarkets, airports and hospitals. Its website says there are 5,668 company-operated stores (now reported to be closer to 6,000) and 3,168 licensed outlets.

Starbucks' statement said they are currently 27% rBGH-free and will be 37% rBGH-free by January 2007.The additional 10% will be the Pacific Northwest, which means all their company-owned stores in Oregon, Washington, Alaska and Idaho will serve only rBGH-free dairy products. I've received information from other sources that Safeway milk in the Northwest will be rBGH-free starting in January - more on this later.

Oregon PSR has been working quietly with Starbucks management for the past 10 months.

I've made rBGH Power Point presentations in March and April to their purchasing, dairy and social responsibility management staff at their Seattle headquarters, with Dr. Martin Donohoe connected by phone. At the latter meeting, their dairy suppliers from all over the country were present. To give you an idea of how extensive the discussions were, our Power Point is only 20 minutes and each meeting went over three hours.

Since the spring meetings, I've been in continuous contact with Starbucks management staff, keeping them updated on the latest science and rBGH news throughout the country and rebutting the information they've received from pro-rBGH forces. I've very much appreciated the opportunity to work directly with them. They have been friendly, responsive and open to receiving new information, the epitome of common courtesy. I had the sense they really wanted to do the right thing and walk the talk of their mission statement.

Other organizations have also been asking Starbucks to go rBGH-free. For many years, the Organic Consumers Association has led a campaign, spearheading the effort to offer organic choices. Food & Water Watch, a new organization, has also asked consumers to request that the stores go rBGH-free. Finally, the web-based video Meatrix 2, which spoofed factory farm dairy practices, did the same.

Congratulations to Starbucks for listening to the scientific arguments against rBGH and to their consumers' wishes. We very much appreciate the enormous amount of work they have put into this and look forward to the day when all their stores will be completely rBGH-free.

UN: Meat Industry Causing 18% of Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Livestock Over-Production & Over-Consumption Generating 18% of All Greenhouse Gases

* Livestock's Long Shadow
By Geoffrey Lean
London Independent, 12.10.06
Straight to the Source

"A United Nations report has identified the world's rapidly growing herds of cattle as the greatest threat to the climate, forests and wildlife. And they are blamed for a host of other environmental crimes, from acid rain to the introduction of alien species, from producing deserts to creating dead zones in the oceans, from poisoning rivers and drinking water to destroying coral reefs. The 400-page report by the Food and Agricultural Organisation, entitled 'Livestock's Long Shadow,' also surveys the damage done by sheep, chickens, pigs and goats. But in almost every case, the world's 1.5 billion cattle are most to blame. Livestock are responsible for 18 per cent of the greenhouse gases that cause global warming... Fuel to produce fertiliser to grow feed, to produce meat and to transport it - and clearing vegetation for grazing - produces 9 per cent of all emissions of carbon dioxide, the most common greenhouse gas. And their wind and manure emit more than one third of emissions of another, methane which warms the world 20 times faster than carbon dioxide."

GSK ads up cost of dealing with HLS

November 27, 2006 -- Philadelphia, PA

It has been reported from activists in Philadelphia that in recent court proceedings, major HLS customer GlaxoSmithKline reported that it has spent roughly $300,000 on security cameras alone (most of these at private residences) in response to protests against the company. GSK indications suggest that all told, roughly half of a million dollars has been spent by the company in dealing with animal rights activists (and that's just in the U.S.

Two lessons to be learned: one, the cost of doing business with HLS is clear. Second, the next time someone criticizes you for demoing, just tell them: "It's good for the economy!"

Victoria's Secret Cleans Up It's Act

WE DID IT! The DIRTY secret got out, consumers spoke up, and Victoria's Secret realized there is nothing SEXY about forest destruction.

Today, Victoria's Secret's parent company, Limited Brands, announced it will stop using paper from Endangered Forests like critical caribou habitat in the Albertan Foothills for its catalog. After two years of campaigning, Victoria's Secret started to and will continue to work to phase out the use of any Endangered Forests products. The company has ensured that at least 10 percent post-consumer waste paper will be used in it's main catalog.

This is a big step, not only for Victoria's Secret, but for the entire catalog industry. A strong environmental standard has been set and the entire industry will be hearing from us - forest destruction will no longer be tolerated! Today's decision is proof that consumers like you really can make a difference.

Let's give thanks! Send the CEO a nice big THANK YOU! Take Action!

When we began this campaign, two years ago, Victoria's Secret was printing 395 million catalogs every year on paper that contained NO recycled content. We made it clear that we were not going to stand by and watch one of our planet's most vital resources be destroyed to sell panties.

Now they've made commitments to use better paper and we couldn't have done this without YOU! Getting a multi-billion-dollar corporation to change its practices is no small feat and that's exactly what we've accomplished. We not only celebrate this victory but we also celebrate your support during the past two years to make this possible.

And while this is an important milestone, there is still work to be done. Victoria's Secret has outlined an excellent policy, but any policy has to be successfully implemented in order to be effective.

So, you'll be hearing from us in the near future. We've got lots of work to do to get the rest of the catalog industry to understand the impact their paper has on our forests. Victoria's Secret's steps today builds momentum for change within the entire sector at large.

Again, thank you! And, please take a moment to say thanks to the CEO of Limited Brands, Victoria's Secret's parent company, for going green!
Take Action!

HOW TO HAVE A TRULY GREEN CHRISTMAS TREE

HOW TO HAVE A TRULY GREEN CHRISTMAS TREE

Swedish researchers have done an energy comparison between real and artificial Christmas trees. Comparing a locally grown live cut-tree to a full size plastic tree, they found that the real tree used about a fifth of the energy (assuming that the plastic tree would be used for ten years). The problem is compounded when considering that most artificial trees are made from environmentally toxic PVC. Christmas tree farmers tout the fact that their trees can grow very well on soils that are inhospitable to other crops. A single acre of Christmas trees produces enough oxygen to support 18 people, while absorbing CO2. Obviously buying a potted tree and planting it outdoors is the most environmentally friendly taunenbaum, but every year, an estimated 35 million Christmas trees are cut down and sold.

For those who are buying cut-trees this year, here are some tips:

1. Try to find trees grown by farms that are organic or use low levels of pesticides. Most tree farms use a gamut of pesticides that can cause everything from skin reactions for the consumer to cancer for a farm worker.
2. Buy a locally grown tree. Oregon and North Carolina grow nearly half of the nation's Christmas trees. Many trees shipped from state to state must be sprayed with additional pesticides.
3. If possible, look to buy a species of tree that is native to your area. Tree farms typically don't need to apply as many pesticides to a tree that is native.

State Department : Animal Rights Activists are biggest threat to businesses

December 11, 2006 - USA

A State Department security briefing earlier this month for U.S. companies with overseas operations highlighted the threat from animal rights extremists as a major one in Western Europe and the United States...

"Although incidents related to terrorism are most likely to make the front page news, Animal Rights Extremism is what's most likely to affect your day-to-day business operations in Western Europe."

Attack of the Terrorist Fax

Attack of the Terrorist Fax

By Pattrice Jones
June, 2003

Once upon a time, there was a slumlord in Ann Arbor. He and his family lived in health and safety paid for, in part, by the rents of his tenants. One day, those tenants grew tired of waiting for heat and essential repairs. After months of petitioning both the landlord and the city, they went on a rent strike but even that usually very effective tactic was taking too long. With winter coming on, they decided to turn up the heat on the landlord, picketing his home and his office so that his neighbors and business associates would know what kind of a man he was. Wherever he went, there they were with their slogans and photos. As long as they stayed on public sidewalks and didn't block traffic, it was all legal perfectlyexcept that they were committing domestic terrorism.

Some years later, also in Michigan, a young gay prisoner with AIDS was gang-raped by fellow inmates. A sympathetic straight inmate who was also HIV+ contacted ACTUP/Ann Arbor to let them know that the guards had locked the young victim in solitary confinement as punishment for 'having sex' and that he was languishing there without medical treatment. ACTUP members first tried to work through channels but their increasingly urgent calls to the prison were brushed off by a warden's office unused to giving priority to prisoners' needs. The intrepid AIDS activists sprung into action, quickly organizing a phone and fax blitz that would make it impossible for the warden to attend to any other business until the young man was released from solitary and given health care. It was very effective and perfectly legal -- except that they were committing domestic terrorism.

And then there was the case of the University of Michigan Regent who was the local equivalent of Jesse Helms. After one of his particularly outrageous anti-gay comments, a motley assortment of gay men and lesbians staged a kiss-in on the sidewalk in front of his house. He and his wife tried to spin the media coverage of the event by offering the activists cider and donuts, but the activists had succeeded in drawing public attention to bigoted remarks that otherwise would have been buried in meeting minutes. The Regent used his leverage to cancel a popular course taught by one of the activists. The students in the course were outraged and arranged for a barrage of email complaints to be sent to the relevant department chair on a given day. They didn't save the activist's job but did convince the department to make sure that the course content would be covered in other classes. All well and good that except, you guessed it, both the kiss-in and the email campaign were acts of domestic terrorism.

Don't dismiss this as an overly paranoid reaction to the provisions of the U.S. PATRIOT Act. Our fears are now fact. The FBI's domestic terrorism has arrested seven activists allegedly associated with Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty (SHAC) and lodged charges against both them and the organization itself. Within the indictments, 'telephone and e-mail blitzes, fax blitzes and computer blockades against HLS in order to divert HLS employees from their regular work' are characterized as a conspiracy to terrorize the company. The tactic of setting up legal pickets on public property outside of private homes is characterized as stalking.

It's time for the rest of the left to stand in solidarity with these activists, and not only because they might be next on the FBI's list. Animal liberation activists like arrestee Josh Harper embrace all of the ideals of progressive activists; they simply include non-human animals among those deserving peace, justice, freedom, and self-determination. A self-described anarchist, Harper recently spoke at a conference at Syracuse University, condemning what he called 'the commodification of life' and acknowledging his intellectual debts to feminist and anti-racist activists and writers.

SHAC campaign coordinator Kevin Jonas, who was also among the recent arestees, also spoke at the Syracuse conference on animal liberation, explaining the strategy behind what has become one of the most effective efforts that any kind of activists have waged against a nefarious corporation. The SHAC campaign is also the subject of a chapter in a new book, Terrorists or Freedom Fighters: Reflections on the Liberation of Animals.

In brief, undercover video footage collected over a span of years revealed shocking abuses of animals at Huntingdon Life Science, a contract research firm to which other companies outsource animal testing of consumer products such as cosmetics and household cleansers. The footage, much of which is almost unbearable to watch, shows HLS employees punching and screaming at beagle puppies, a live monkey being dissected to death without anaethesia, and other atrocities. These films showed that the animals at HLS were suffering terror, pain, and psychological trauma associated with such abuses on top of the usual terror, pain, and psychological trauma associated with the enslavement and torture inherent in vivisection itself.

In response, animal advocates have launched a multi-faceted international campaign that applies pressure to both HLS and its customers. Activists affiliated with or inspired by the organization known as SHAC utilize the whole range of legal protest tactics ranging from public education to picket lines outside the homes of executives who have chosen to engage HLS to do animal testing for their companies. Meanwhile, without being asked, underground activists have chosen HLS and its customers for direct actions ranging from property destruction to animal rescues. As a result, HLS has lost customers while seeing its security costs rise. Its public pronouncements to the contrary, the company is on the ropes and unlikely to survive if the campaign continues.

Hence the impetus for the FBI action. Yet again, the Feds have stepped in to prove what leftists and animal liberationists already know: that the state and its police forces exist primarily to protect property.Hence the impetus for the FBI action. Yet again, the Feds have stepped in to prove what leftists and animal liberationists already know: that the state and its police forces exist primarily to protect property.

As Ward Churchill notes in his introduction to Terrorists or Freedom Fighters, the rest of the left can and should learn from the animal liberation movement, which utilizes direct action more consistently and effectively than any other currently active social change movement. Even the least radical animal activist accepts the premise that one must 'walk the talk' by making sure that one's own purchases are consistent with ones stated beliefs. What if peace activists did the same? Virtually all animal activists are vegan, meaning that they do not purchase products made from or tested on animals and boycott all companies known to participate in any kind animal abuse. What if all of those who have marched for peace stopped buying war? How much more effective would the peace movement be if anti-war demonstrations were backed up by massive tax resistance and (most importantly) an uncompromising boycott of GE and other war profiteers? If the many millions of people worldwide who opposed the invasion of Iraq had voted with their wallets, we might well have been able to stop the war before it started.

That's just one instance in which other activists might have been well served by taking a page from the playbook of a movement that has, in a few short decades, profoundly influenced both laws and public opinion. Since speciesism is, along with sexism, the oldest and most firmly rooted of the interwoven oppressions that have a stranglehold on the earth, the animal liberation movement has a very long way to go before achieving its goals. But remarkable progress already has been made. In Austria, the members of Parliament recently unanimously adopted a package of laws that will enshrine animal protection in the national constitution, end the traffic in dogs and cats, ban fur farms, and outlaw a number of cruel but usual practices, such as caging hens in egg factories and keeping dogs on chains. The United States is far behind Europe, but a combination of illegal direct action and above-ground consumer education recently led the California State Senate to pass a bill banning the production and sale of pate foie gras, which is made by force-feeding ducks and geese until they develop the diseased livers from which this 'delicacy' is made.

According to a recent Gallup poll, more than half of all people in the United States now favor strict laws concerning the treatment of farmed animals (who are, at present, not covered by most state laws concerning cruelty to animals). One-fourth of all people in the United States have come to believe that animals deserve the same legal protections as human beings. These are remarkable numbers in a country where farmed animals have traditionally been denied any legal protections and animal rights activists have been derided (by both conservatives and the left) as lunatics without a clue as to the pulse of the public. Steadily increasing support for animal rights among the general public and among historically disenfranchised people suggests that the animal liberation message resonates with many people and that animal advocates have done a good job of imagining and enacting different ways of getting that message across to different groups of people.

The animal liberation movement still has a very long way to go in that respect and, indeed, in the midst of one of those internal upheavals that all movements face when they begin to integrate the concerns and analyses of other movements into their own work. Just as feminists had to learn to include class and race in their analyses of issues while labor and anti-racist activists have had to learn to integrate feminist insights into their work, the animal liberation movement has been challenged from within to understand how speciesism relates to racism, sexism, and other intra-species inequalities. Movement conferences and publications now routinely address those issues, which were all but absent only a few short years ago.

he time has come for other progressive movements to respond in kind by, at minimum, extending solidarity to progressive animal liberationists ensnared by police oppression and by being willing to at least consider the arguments that animal liberationists have been making concerning the intersections between the exploitation of animals by people and the various ways that people exploit each other. It wasn't so long ago that leftists dismissed environmentalists and vice versa. The 'Battle in Seattle' never would have been won if it weren't for the progress we have made in bridging that gap. Given the number of people who are actively involved in working for animal welfare or liberation, the potential benefits of bridging the divide between animal advocates and other progressive activists are even more exciting.

Liberationists of all stripes believe that no one is free when anyone is oppressed. What could the left possibly lose by embracing activists who are willing to place their own freedom on the line in the service of the most generous interpretation of that venerable slogan? Remember: Only the destruction of the category 'being without rights' will ensure that no one is ever again pushed into it. In the interim, we can all agree that the widening of the category "domestic terrorist" to include people engaged in non-violent civil disobedience and heretofore legal protest tactics must be resisted with all of our mights.

Microwaved Water - See What It Does To Plants

Microwaved Water - See What It Does To Plants

Below is a science fair project. In it she took filtered water and divided it into two parts. The first part she heated to boiling in a pan on the stove, and the second part she heated to boiling in a microwave. Then after cooling she used the water to water two identical plants to see if there would be any difference in the growth between the normal boiled water and the water boiled in a microwave. She was thinking that the structure or energy of the water may be compromised by microwave. As it turned out, even she was amazed at the difference.

I have known for years that the problem with microwaved anything is not the radiation people used to worry about, It's how it corrupts the DNA in the food so the body can not recognize it. So the body wraps it in fat cells to protect itself from the dead food or it eliminates it fast. Think of all the Mothers heating up milk in these "Safe" appliances. What about the nurse in Canada that warmed up blood for a transfusion patient and accidentally killed them when the blood went in dead. But the makers say it's safe. Never mind then, keep using them. Ask your Doctor I am sure they will say it's safe too. Proof is in the pictures of living plants dying. Remember you are also Living. Take Care.

Ten Reasons to throw out your Microwave Oven

From the conclusions of the Swiss, Russian and German scientific clinical studies, we can no longer ignore the microwave oven sitting in our kitchens. Based on this research, we will conclude this article with the following:

1). Continually eating food processed from a microwave oven causes long term - permanent - brain damage by "shorting out" electrical impulses in the brain [de-polarizing or de-magnetizing the brain tissue].
2). the human body cannot metabolize [break down] the unknown by-products created in microwaved food.
3). Male and female hormone production is shut down and/or altered by continually eating microwaved foods.
4). the effects of microwaved food by-products are residual [long term, permanent] within the human body.
5). Minerals, vitamins, and nutrients of all microwaved food is reduced or altered so that the human body gets little or no benefit, or the human body absorbs altered compounds that cannot be broken down.
6). the minerals in vegetables are altered into cancerous free radicals when cooked in microwave ovens.
7). Microwaved foods cause stomach and intestinal cancerous growths [tumors]. This may explain the rapidly increased rate of colon cancer in America.
8). the prolonged eating of microwaved foods causes cancerous cells to increase in human blood.
9). Continual ingestion of microwaved food causes immune system deficiencies through lymph gland and blood serum alterations.
10). Eating microwaved food causes loss of memory, concentration, emotional instability, and a decrease of intelligence.

Have you tossed out your microwave oven yet?

After you throw out your microwave you can use a toaster oven as a replacement. It works well for most and is nearly as quick.

The use of artificial microwave transmissions for subliminal psychological control, a.k.a. "brainwashing", has also been proven. We're attempting to obtain copies of the 1970's Russian research documents and results written by Drs. Luria and Perov specifying their clinical experiments in this area.

Prescription For Disaster

Come see Prescription for Disaster, a film narrated by Gary Null, which explains how the pharmaceutical industry have used their wealth and power to manipulate people into thining their drugs are healthy. Meanwhile 100,000 Americans died last year from side-effects of these drug and 2 million are hospitalized! Vioxx, Celebrex, Bextra have all been recalled due to drug safety issues, but these are not isolated incidents, this is the norm. Come see how they get away with killing so many people with uselss drugs we don't need. Come see the alternatives.

When you have a headache it is NOT because you have an aspirin-deficiency! Taking OTC and prescription drugs can cost you your life one day and this film might save yours!
