WASHINGTON (AFP) - Intelligence has nothing to do with wealth, according to a US study published Tuesday which found that people with below average smarts were just as wealthy as those with higher IQ scores.

"People don't become rich because they are smart," said Jay Zagorsky, research scientist at Ohio State University whose study appears in the Journal Intelligence.

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics survey included 7,403 Americans who have been interviewed repeatedly since 1979. Based on 2004 answers, people who are now in their mid-40s showed no link between brain- and earning-power.

"Your IQ has really no relationship to your wealth. And being very smart does not protect you from getting into financial difficulty," Zagorsky said.

The study confirmed previous research which has shown that smarter people tend to earn more money, but pointed out there is a difference between high pay and overall wealth.

"The average income difference between a person with an IQ score in the normal range (100) and someone in the top two percent of society (130) is currently between 6,000 and 18,500 dollars per year," it said.

"But when it came to total wealth and the likelihood of financial difficulties, people of below average and average intelligence did just fine when compared to the super-intelligent."

An irregular pattern of total wealth as well as financial distress levels -- such as maxed out credit cards, bankruptcy and missing bill payments -- emerged among the various degrees of intelligence, the study said.

The study measured intelligence based on scores from the US Armed Services Qualification Test, a general aptitude test used by the Department of Defense.

Economic Research Service (ERS) of the US Department of Agriculture has revised its estimate of US broiler production downward for the 2007.

Total broiler meat production for 2007 is forecast at 35,575 million lbs (16.137 million mt), a decline from 35,753 million lbs (16.217 million mt) form the previous year. According to the Service, this will be the first decline in production since 1973.

Estimated broiler cold storage holdings at the end of the first quarter of 2007 was reduced to 610 million lbs (276.691 million kg), 29% lower than the previous year and down 90 million lbs (40.823 million kg) from the previous estimate. At the end of February, cold storage holdings of almost all broiler products were down. Products such as leg quarters, drumsticks, and thighs were all at least 44% lower than at the same time in 2006.

It's convenient and widely available but a growing group of researchers warn that WiFi may be hazardous to your health.

William Stewart, the head of Britain's Health Protection Agency, is worried that wireless Internet access may pose a health threat — particularly to children — and is privately calling for a study of the hazards of WiFi, the Independent reports.

Researchers believe that the electromagnetic radiation emitted by the phones, cell-phone towers and WiFi masts are contributing to an "electric smog" that could pose a future health risk.

The researchers say this smog of electromagnetic radiation is 1 billion times stronger than the natural fields in which living cells have developed over the last 3.8 billion years. Children may be more vulnerable as their skulls are thinner and their nervous systems are still developing, not to mention that they'll be exposed to more radiation over their lifetime.

The Austrian Medical Association is just one group that wants to keep WiFi out of the classroom, the Independent reports.

The head of environmental health and medicine in the province of Salzburg calls WiFi "dangerous" to sensitive people. "The number of people and the danger are both growing," Dr. Gerd Oberfeld said.

The World Health Organization says that three out of every 100 people are "electrosensitive," the paper reports.

In Britain, a lawmaker from the wireless city of Norwich is calling for an official inquiry into WiFi's risks and the nation's Professional Association of Teachers is lobbying Britain's education secretary for one, as well.

"I am concerned that so many wireless networks are being installed in schools and colleges without any understanding of the possible long-term consequences," said Philip Parkin, the association's general secretary. "The proliferation of wireless networks could be having serious implications for the health of some staff and pupils without the cause being recognized."

My Virginia Tech Shooting Comments

In response to the devastating shooting that occurred this past week at Virginia Tech University, I just have two comments.

One, I find it sketchy how police and EMT workers at Virginia Tech claim that campus police were given a federal order to stand down and not pursue killer Cho Seung-Hui as Monday's bloodshed unfolded. This explains the complete non-response of the police in the two hour gap between Cho's first two murders and the wider rampage that would follow later that morning.

Two, I find it a shame that the establishment are using this shooting to destroy our right as Americans to own guns. Here are two things you gun control nuts need to realize: Criminals don't obey laws, and gun control only disarms the victims.

The Bush Administration is doing everything it can to give the military and police in this country a monopoly on gun ownership. Despite being falsely seen as a NRA-supporter, Bush supports disarming airline pilots, forfeiting gun rights for misdemeanors, and argues that the total DC gun ban is a reasonable restriction on the 2nd Amendment.

During the devastating aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, this administration has declared Martial Law in New Orleans and suspended the Bill of Rights. Law abiding homeowners were handcuffed by the U.S. military, and forced to sit on sidewalks while their homes were raided; confiscating their guns.

In the event of a natural disaster, shouldn't homeowners be allowed to protect their families and private property? In the event of a hijacking, shouldn't airline pilots be able to save everyone on board by shooting the hijackers? In the event of a school shooting, shouldn't the principal or teachers be able to gun down the armed nut?
